EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy for children and young people.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy that helps people recover from distressing or traumatic experiences. It is recommended by NICE for post-traumatic stress disorder, and can be adapted sensitively for children and young people.

Who it is for

EMDR can help children and young people affected by frightening, overwhelming or traumatic events, or by memories that continue to cause distress. It may be suitable when a child feels stuck with worries, flashbacks, or strong reactions linked to something that happened in the past.

What sessions look like

Our accredited EMDR therapists begin by building trust and helping the young person feel safe and prepared. Later, the therapist gently supports the child to recall a difficult memory while guiding sets of side-to-side eye movements or other rhythmic, bilateral stimulation. This helps the brain process the memory so that it feels less overwhelming.

How it helps

  • Distressing memories lose their intensity over time.
  • Reduced anxiety, flashbacks and upsetting reactions.
  • A calmer, more settled sense of self.
  • Renewed ability to move forward.
